Four Things to Know About the Sydney Harbour Bridge

A familiar sight to anyone who knows the Sydney skyline, the Sydney Harbour Bridge sits in the Sydney Harbour and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. You might be interested in visiting the bridge or even walking on it; if that’s the case, keep reading to find out more so that you can make appropriate plans and get ready to see the bridge in all its splendor whether in the daytime or at night.

It’s Free to Walk It

A great thing about this bridge is that if you and your family want to get a one-of-a kind look at the harbour from the bridge, you can. Walking across the bridge is totally free and can be done both ways. You just need to find the bus drop off spot and then you can take a leisurely stroll across the thousands of feet of bridge.

You Can Climb It

While walking across the bridge is free, there is a special bridge climb for the truly brave. The ticket prices for this climb can venture into the hundreds of dollars, but it will definitely leave you with a story to tell, a free cap and a picture of your group at the top of the bridge on the viewing platform.

You are given clothing to wear to protect you from the winds and other weather conditions, and are tethered to the bridge with a wire so that you are always safe during the climb. The entire climb takes a bit longer than three hours, so it’s important to set aside enough time to do this if you’d like this to be one of the activities you do in the city.

You Can Also Take the Train

More than one line runs across the bridge, so if you want to see the harbour from that vantage point, you need not walk. You can be whisked away by rail on your way to other attractions and activities in Sydney.

You Can Ride Under It

If you’d rather not get your blood racing and your heart pumping, you can take a more leisurely trip near the bridge by sailing underneath it. If you take the ferry, you can simply get on board and snap pictures of the bridge as you go past. This gives you a great opportunity to get a closer up look at some of the other attractions in the harbour as well.

If you’d like to see everything the harbor has to offer, this might be the way to go. You and your family can also have a bite to eat and look for the secret Whiteley garden in Lavendar bay, a beautiful spot on the harbour that boasts kookaburras and other creatures.

With this much information about the Sydney Harbour bridge, you should feel better prepared for whatever you decide to do. Talk this article over with your family so that you all can make decisions about what to do when you arrive in the city of Sydney.
